Marathon walk at Kielder to support hospice care

Scottish Woodlands staff from the North-East of England are taking on a marathon walking challenge to raise vital funds for hospice care.

10 employees based in Alnwick, Northumberland, and Wolsingham (County Durham) will be walking 26 miles around Kielder Forest on Friday 6th June.

The money raised will be used to support HospiceCare Northumberland, which serves a population of more than 65,000. The charity delivers practical and emotional care and support to adults living with a terminal illness which requires palliative and end-of-life care. It also offers support to the families and carers and provides bereavement and dementia support services. There is no charge for the services, which will cost the hospice around £1.4 million in 2025.

Amy Herbst, Office Administrator, based in the Alnwick office, who is organising the event, said: "We decided to support HospiceCare Northumberland as a few of our staff know someone close who has had amazing support from the charity.”

"We have raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support in the past and decided this was also a great way to support a local charity that more of our employees, and people close to them, might use in future."

The walk is expected to take around 8 hours, given the challenging terrain.

Kielder is the largest man-made woodland in England with three-quarters of its 250 square miles covered by forest. It has provided vital timber supplies for many decades, but is also home to around 50% of England's red squirrel population.
