Ground flora training on the bonnie banks

Scottish Woodlands staff have taken part in a ground flora recognition course on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

The group of forest managers, harvesting managers, forest planners and environmental advisors travelled to Cashel Forest, north of Balmaha - part of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

The training was specifically designed to help with the identification of species and formed part of the annual ASNW and PAWS (Ancient Semi-Natural Woodland and Plantations on Ancient Woodland Sites) Ground Flora Recognition course.

The course was led by Carol Crawford, a botanical expert and daughter of Scottish Woodlands’ first Managing Director, Denis Crawford.

Jemma McLachlan, Environment Forest Manager with Scottish Woodlands Ltd, said: “Carol used her expertise to introduce all the attendees to the important flora which make up our ancient woodlands - and which help differentiate between the key woodland types."

“The course was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone taking part and provided valuable skills and knowledge to help our management of ancient woodlands.”
