Forest Manager enjoys her first Royal Highland Show as National Chair of the SAYFC

A Forest Manager with Scottish Woodlands Ltd will this week enjoy her first Royal Highland Show as National Chair of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs (SAYFC).

Jillian Kennedy, who works in the Perth office, has been a long-standing office-bearer of the SAYFC, and took over recently as Chair from Ally Brunton.

Jillian, 29, a member of Aberfeldy & District JAC and former SAYFC East region chair, said: “I was incredibly honoured - and excited - to take over, as well as being a little nervous. It’s been a very busy time in post so far and that certainly won’t let up in Highland Show week, where we will be showcasing members talents across tug o’war, stockmanship, art & crafts, and even a visit to the forestry arena for pole climbing!”

Jillian is the daughter of Martin Kennedy, a beef and sheep farmer in Perthshire and a popular National Farmers’ Union Scotland President who passed on the reins in February 2025 after four years in post.

She came through the Scottish Woodlands Graduate Development Programme and is passionate about building stronger and more lasting bridges between forestry and farming.

“As someone with a farming background, now working in forestry, it’s vital to encourage better working relationships between farmers and foresters, and greater mutual understanding,” Jillian said.

Looking ahead to her year in office, Jillian said she hopes to learn from the SAYFC’s 3700 members and give them a stronger voice. She also expressed pride in launching the Junior Forum, which aims to give younger members a safe space to share their views.

Jillian is also an excellent Highland Dancer who has taken part in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Ian Robinson, Managing Director of Scottish Woodlands, said: “We always encourage our staff to pursue their passions and interests - and we’re delighted that Jillian has taken up the role of SAYFC National Chair."

“She’s a brilliant advocate for rural communities and works really hard to break down barriers and encourage mutual respect and trust between different parts of those communities. She is a fantastic ambassador for Scottish Woodlands and we wish her well for her time in office.”
