Scottish Woodlands

Scottish Woodlands Ltd - the United Kingdom's leading Forest Management Company

Certification

Information on our FSC and PEFC Group and Resource Manager scheme is available here.

In the current markets, being able to offer certified timber is often crucial to an owner, and can even mean the difference between market access and no access. In the UK, there is one agreed Certification Standard, the UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) which has been ratified by FSC and endorsed by PEFC for use in the UK.

Scottish Woodlands was the first major Forestry Management Company to achieve FSC certification in 1999, and we remain at the forefront of forest certification, having also achieved PEFC certification in 2010. Members of the Scottish Woodlands Group and Resource Manager scheme are therefore able to sell timber into both FSC certified and PEFC certified markets, subject to meeting the relevant Chain of Custody requirements.

We have the ability to harvest and market timber under the following categories –

  • FSC Certified – subject to the woodland owner holding an FSC Forest Management Certificate, e.g. as a member of our Group and Resource Manager Scheme.
  • FSC – Controlled Wood – this timber from non-certified forests which otherwise meets the criteria of being sourced from a legal source and approved under UK Forestry and Planning Regulations. N.B. Controlled Wood is only applicable to processors holding a FSC Chain of Custody certificate, who wish to demonstrate that the non-certified element of their inputs has been risk assessed to demonstrate it is from non-controversial sources.
  • PEFC Certified – subject to the woodland owner holding a PEFC Forest Management Certificate, e.g. as a member of our Group and Resource Manager Scheme.
