Biomass and Energy Wood

The use of wood for energy production on a large scale has recently emerged as a genuinely new and very welcome market.

The government intends to create a low-carbon economy and has identified the need to encourage the development of a wide range of renewable options including power plants fuelled by biomass. Initially the focus was on electricity generation but the Renewable Heat Incentive, which will be launched in the summer of 2011, is designed to lead to a significant increase in the level of renewable heat and woody biomass is a very efficient fuel from which heat can be produced.

Scottish Woodlands has been actively pursuing the production of energy wood as part of our timber harvesting operations since 2006 with the objective being to create an additional product and thereby increase the overall return to the woodland owner. The Company is now becoming established as a major supplier of wood fuel to the biomass energy industry.

We have now achieved a position where we have the ability to produce a high quality industrial wood fuel from forest residues (stumps and brash) and also recover additional stem wood for conversion into wood fuel. Typically, volume recovery can be increased by up to 20% resulting in a very welcome additional income for the woodland owner.
