Firewood: Wester Ross & the Isle of Skye
Conifer firewood is becoming an extremely viable and efficient alternative to fossil fuels, with excellent supporting environmental credentials.
Scottish Woodlands Ltd are pioneering 'bulk' deliveries of conifer firewood material in the north west highlands. Typically we can offer dry pine or spruce logs from well managed sustainable forests in the highlands (to FSC certified standard). The logs are in 3m (10') lengths and have a maximum diameter of 40cm (steering wheel size).
Some of the benefits of using wood fuel grown in the Highlands are -
- Burning firewood is generally considered "carbon neutral"
- Net carbon emissions are reduced when compared to fossil fuels
- Switching to wood fuel can help reduce fuel bills
- As long as forests are sustainably managed, wood fuels derived from them are a renewable source of energy
- Woodfuel helps create and sustain rural jobs
Delivery Guidelines
We can deliver in 3 volume quantities. 10 tonnes and 15 tonne loads (delivered on self discharging (crane) lorry equivalent in size to a 6 wheeler oil or gas tanker truck), and a 25 tonne load, which would be delivered by a self discharging articulated timber truck.
25 tonne loads offer both the best economic rate for both the customer and haulier (and the lowest carbon footprint), so if at all possible please try maximise the quantity ordered!
Please ensure that you have space to store your firewood and that we can safely gain access with a truck. Considerations include -
- Overhead powerlines
- Buried utilities
- Drainage
- Paving slabs
In general the firewood timbers are 3.0m in length. As an example a 10 tonne load will require a 'footprint' of approximately 3m x 3m and a stack height of 2m.
All loads are weighed using the latest in on board weighing technology for accurate and efficient delivery.
Storing Your Wood
For the most efficient storage of your wood please consider the following helpful guidelines.
- It is best to stack your firewood outside where the air can circulate and best to store off-ground so it cannot absorb moisture. Pallets and treated fence posts make suitable foundations
- Stack with bark side down otherwise the bark will act as a lid and stop the moisture from evaporating and the risk from mould will increase. Leave small gaps between the wood to allow air to circulate and then top the stack off with logs with bark side up - so they act as tiles to allow rainwater to run off. The more surface area which is exposed the more rapid the drying process
- You can put some sort of water proof covering over the logs to stop the rain water permeating but do not cover the sides.
- Keep near to house so you do not have to go too far too fill your log basket!
- You can rotate your logs so you bring an amount indoors to gently warm and further still evaporate any moisture and after a couple of day then place them in the basket next to the fire - then refill you indoors store up and so on
